Hotel Hints
Carnaval Pricing:
If you plan to visit during the famous Carnaval de Barranquilla (February/March), book at least 6 months in advance. Prices triple or quadruple, and small boutique hotels like this sell out first because they offer a quiet retreat from the street parties. Dress Code:
Barranquilla is a business and fashion hub. People dress well here. While it is hot, wearing beachwear (flip-flops and tank tops) in the malls or nice restaurants is frowned upon. Pack light linen clothes ("guayaberas" for men) to blend in.
Taxi Safety:
Riomar is safe but avoid hailing taxis on the street at night. Ask someone at reception to call a trusted taxi or use Uber or InDriver.
The ‘Brisa‘ Season
From December until March strong trade winds are blowing over Barranquilla ("Las Brisas"). That makes the weather very pleasant, especially in the garden of this hotel, but be careful with hats and loose items when walking outside.
Hydration & AC:
Barranquilla is humid. The hotel will provide water, but you should always carry a bottle. Also, be prepared for “thermal shock”—going from the 35°C heat outside to the freezing 18°C air conditioning in the malls and the hotel room.
No Hot Water? Check First:
On the Caribbean coast of Colombia, the concept of hot water never existed because the cold tap was always naturally lukewarm. However, a boutique hotel of this standard should have hot water showers. Check knob settings anyway, sometimes ‘C’ is Hot (Caliente) and sometimes it’s Cold.
